L1 - introduction Flashcards
1
Q
What is a stem cell?
A
A cell that has the potential to differentiate into specialised tissue as well as copies of themselves
2
Q
What are the ways to classify stem cells?
A
Age of development, tissue of origin and differentation potential
3
Q
What are the different types of differentiation potentials?
A
Totipotent - can diff into all cell types inc extra embryonic structures
Pluripotent - 3 germ layers
Multipotent - different cells types from tissue/organ
Unipotent - single cell type
4
Q
Do stem cells or transit amplifying cells have fast cell cycles?
A
Transit amplifying cells
5
Q
How can stem cells be used for therapy?
A
- Allogenic - derived from donor and expanded in the lab
- Autologus - transplants are from the same patient e.g iPSCs
- Recruitment of endogenous SC from the same tissue
6
Q
What are other uses for stem cells?
A
- Drug screening
- Studying genetic condition
- Pharmacogenetics
- Insight into fundamental biological processes
