What is deviation from social norms?
Behaviour which doesn’t follow accepted society’s rules and patterns
Behaviour that violates social rules is seen as
Abnormal
Undesirable
Unacceptable
How can rules vary?
May be explicit like laws
May be codes of conduct
How is abnormality shown?
Behaving in a strange way deviating from expectations
How may norms and values vary?
By culture or time
This definition looks at what impact?
Impact of an individual’s behaviour on others
What are social rules and what are they based on?
Rules based on moral standards which govern behaviour
Devising behaviour leads to what in others?
Concern that the person is suffering from a mental disorder
Advantage?
Distinguished between desirable and undesirable
Protects public from effects and damaging consequences which can be disturbing
Disadvantage related to context?
May be abnormal in one situation but not in another, e.g. nudity shopping/nudist beach
Sometimes acceptable/not
Disadvantage related to eccentricity
May just be odd/eccentric
Labelling them
Based on behaviour doesn’t have to mean mentally disturbed
