Krebs cycle Flashcards
When is aerobic glycolysis seen?
in invasive cancers
What does aerobic glycolysis do?
converts glucose into lactic acid in the presence of oxygen
Why do cancer cells use aerobic glycolysis?
because running fast glycolysis creates intra-and pericellular acidic conditions, which tumor cells proliferate in. Normal cells cannot adapt to acidic conditions
What kind of cells do end stage metastases favor?
glycolytic cells and cells resistant to hypoxia
Are early tumors vascular?
Not before breaching the basement membrane. It can tolerate anaerobic conditions
What occurs during the aerobic metabolism of a carb?
electrons are taken from carbohydrates and given to oxygen in the electron transport system
What occurs during fermentation of a carbohydrate?
electrons are taken from carbohydrates and given back while making ATP. This is anaerobic and the products are 2 lactate and 2 ethanol
