UN force advances - UN and south korean forces (from pusan) pushed back north koreans beyond their original border (38th parallel) within weeks

UN presses on - despite having removed north korean troops fro south korea, they kept pushing despite China’s threats

UN retreats - 200,000 Chineses troops join the north koreans, launching a blistering attack. they had modern tanks and planes supplied by the ussr. war conditions were terrible for americans, but the chinese were more familiar
what happened in april 1951
macarthur is sacked - macarthur wanted to carry on the war but truman felt that saving south korea was good enough. it was to great of a risk to start another was with the USSR. macarthur ignored the UN’s instruction and openly threatened China, so truman removed hi from his position and brought him back home

peace talks begin - fighting stops at 38th parallel
what happened in july 1953
armistice - truman replaced by eisenhower who wanted to end the war. stalin’s death made China and north korea less confident. armistice reached and border was much the same as it had been before the war
how was the korean war a success for the USA
showed its committment to contain communism - the south remained out of communist hands
