Kolb's Model Flashcards
Draw the model of Kolb’s
- Concrete Experience
- Reflective Observation
- Abstract Conceptualisation
- Active Experimentation
Transfer of Learning
Define Experiential Learning
Learning through doing and reflecting on that learning
Explain Concrete Experience Stage
-practising and learning skills
- participants learn to be sensitive to their own and others feelings
Explain Reflective Observation Stage
-Participants make careful observations prior to making a judgement
- they are encouraged to reflect, describe, communicate, learn from the experience
- they look at issues from different perspectives to find meaning
Most difficult stage as they are comparing before and after learning
Explain Abstract Conceptualisation stage
Participants draw logical conclusions from past and recent experiences and add feedback from others to their own conclusions
-consider patterns in their learning, develop theories
- modify goals based on critical thinking and communication with others
Explain Active Experimentation Stage
Application of new learning and aim to perform skills better through using new or different approaches
-take risks and influence others
Kolbs Learning Styles
Doing(AE) Watching(RO)
Feeling (CE) A D
Thinking (AC) C A
Converger
Doing and thinking, rational and unemotional
learning preference: practical application of ideas and solving problems
characteristics:
- prefer technical tasks
- less concerned with people and interpersonal aspects
- best at finding practical uses for ideas and theories
Diverger
Feeling and watching, Brainstorm ideas
Learning Preference - innovative and imaginative approach to doing things
characteristics:
- prefer to watch and adapt through observation rather than action
- able to look at things from different perspectives
- gather information and use imagination to solve problems
Assimilator
Watching and thinking, focused on plan not the outcome
learning preference - form a number of different observations and thoughts into an integrated whole
characteristics:
- require clear explanation rather than practical opportunity
- like to design projects and experiments
- focused on ideas and abstract concepts.
Accomodator
Doing and Feeling, Impatient
learning preference - active experimentaion and concrete experience
characteristics:
- ‘hands on’ practical and experiential
- rely on intuition rather than logic
- prefer to work in teams
Criticism of Kolbs
- theory models an innate process
- transfer of learning has not been researched properly
- gives the impression that stages are of equal time
- may develop fixed ideas about learning
