What does UNESCO stand for
United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisations
What is UNESCO’s overarching aim?
To seek to encourage the conservation, preservation and protection of cultural and natural heritages from around the world, that are of outstanding value to humanity.
Other aims of UNESCO
- Provides emergency assisstance to world heritage sites in immediate danger
- Supports state parties to safeguard their heritage properties through providing technical assistance and professional training
- Encourages international involvement in conservation
- Encourages state parties to establish management plans and set up reporting systems for conservation of their heritage sites
- Support state parties’ public awareness-building activities for conservation
Ownership and Control of Land
- World Heritage listing doesn’t affect ownership rights
- Local and state laws still apply
Benefits of world heritage listings
- Increases international recognition, promoting national and local pride
- increases tourism
- Improves tourism and management employment income
- Spurs regional planning and management
- Results in improved visitor interpretation and other facilities
