O – Obedience and Punishment (Stage 1)
S – Self-Interest (Stage 2)
I – Interpersonal Conformity (Stage 3)
L – Law and Order (Stage 4)
S – Social Contract (Stage 5)
U – Universal Principles (Stage 6)
Morality is about avoiding punishment or gaining rewards.
Obedience and Punishment – “I don’t want to get in trouble.”
Self-Interest – “What’s in it for me?”
Preconventional (Approx. Ages 4–10)
Morality is based on social rules and approval.
Interpersonal Conformity – “I want people to like me.”
Law and Order – “Follow the rules because they’re the rules.”
Conventional (Approx. Ages 10–13 and up)
Morality is based on internal values and principles.
Social Contract – “Rules are important, but they can be changed for the greater good.”
Universal Ethical Principles – “I follow my conscience, even if it goes against the law.”
Postconventional (Adolescence and adulthood, if reached)
