Knee joint Flashcards
What are the 2 articulations of the knee joint?
- condyles of femur and tibia
2. femur and patella
What does the femoral-patella articulation allow?
insertion of quads directly over the knee
What is the blood supply to the knee?
genicular branches of the femoral and popliteal arteries
What are the nerves innervating the knee?
femoral, tibial and common fibular
Where is the capsule of the knee joint deficient?
anteriorly
What are the funcitons of the lateral and medial menisci?
- deepen articular surface for stability
- shock absorbers
What are the menisci attached to
medial - medial collateral ligament
lateral - none (freely moves)
Why does a meniscus tear heal poorly?
they have a poor blood supply
What are the main bursa of the knee joint?
suprapatella, prepatella, infrapatella, semimembranous
What are the ligaments supporting the knee joint?
- patellar ligament (continuation of quads)
- medial collateral ligament
- lateral collateral ligament
- anterior cruciate ligament
- posterior cruciate ligament
What is the unhappy triad?
damage to the ACL, medial meniscus and medial collateral ligament
What is genu varu?
bow-leg
- due to lateral tear
What is genu valgum?
knock-knee
- due to medial tear
