knee joint Flashcards
tibiofemoral articulations
medial + lateral femoral condyles articulate with tibial condyles
patellofemoral articulation
anterior aspect distal femur articulates with patella
blood supply
genicular anastomoses around knee, supplied by genicular branches of femoral and popliteal arteries
nerve supply
femoral
tibial
common fibular
menisci
fibrocartilage structures
medial + lateral
menisci functions
deepen articular surface of tibia –> increase stability
act as shock absorbers by increasing surface area to dissipate forces
what is medial meniscus attatched to
fixed to tibial collateral ligament
damage to this ligaent often results in medial meniscal tear
bursae of knee joint
suprapatellar bursa
prepatellar bursa
infrapatellar bursa
semimembranosus bursa
patellar ligament
continuation of quadriceps femoris
attatches to tibial tuberosity
collateral ligaments
2 strap-like ligaments
stabilise hinge motion and prevents excessive medial or lateral movement
cruciate ligaments
connect femur and tibia, in doing so cross over eachother creating an X
anterior cruciate ligament
prevents anterior dislocation of tibia onto femur
posterior cruciate ligament
prevents posterior dislocation of tibia onto femur
knee extensors
quadriceps femoris
knee flexors
hamstrings
gracilis
sartorius
popliteus
