Kidneys + Excretion Flashcards
Understand that water is reabsorbed into the blood from the…
Collecting duct
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment.
Eg body water content and body temperature
Describe ultrafiltration in the bowman’s capsule
The glomerular filtrate separates different sized molecules under pressure
What does urine contain?
Water, urea and salts
Lungs, kidneys and skin are organs of…
Excretion
How do kidneys carry out their roles of excretion and osmoregulation
Kidney is supples with blood through a renal artery (comes from aorta, so blood is high pressure). inside the kidney, the blood is filtered and cleaned blood passes through renal vein to vena cava. The urine passes out of kidneys through the ureters and is stored in bladder. The wall of the the urethra has two sphincters (muscles) that contract to hold back urine. The lower sphincter is usually consciously controlled, but the upper automatically relaxes when the bladder is full.
Homeostasis - what things does the body regulate?
Water and salts Levels of carbon dioxide in the blood Blood pH Concentration of dissolved glucose Body temperature
