Hormones Flashcards
Sources, Roles and Effects of:
insulin
from pancreas
lowers blood glucose
The role of ADH in regulating the water content of the blood
anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) works when you lose too much water and are not replacing it. (Concentration of blood increases) Detected by hypothalamus, cells in the hypothalamus cause the pituitary gland to release ADH. It travels to they kidneys, causes the colleccting ducts to become more permeable to water so more water goes into blood. Therefore more concentrated urine.
The role of testosterone in the development of secondary sexual characteristics.
Testosterone controls the development of the male secondary sex characteristics
- growth of penis and testes
- growth of facial hair and body hair
- muscle development
- breaking of the voice
Sources, roles and effects of:
testosterone
From the testes
controls development of male secondary sexual characteristics
Sources, roles and effects of:
Adrenaline
From the adrenal glands
Prepares body for physical activities
secreted when frightened, excited or angry.
Sources, Roles and effects of:
Progesterone
From the ovaries.
- regulates menstrual cycle
- completes development of uterus lining, which thickens ready for the fertilised egg to sink into it.
Also prevents the release of FSH and LH to stop ovulation.
Sources, roles and effects of:
Oestrogen
From the ovaries.
Controls development of female secondary sexual characteristics.
Repairs the lining of the uterus after menstruation. Also slows down production of FSH, whilst stimulation secretion of LH.
The roles of oestrogen in the development of secondary sexual characteristics.
Oestrogen is secreted from ovaries to produce the female secondary sex characteristics and the beginning of menstruation.
Sources, roles and effects of:
FSH (Follicle Stimulation Hormone)
From the pituitary gland
stimulates egg development and oestrogen secretion in females and sperm production in males.
Sources, roles and effects of:
LH (Luteinising Hormone)
From the pituitary gland
stimulates egg release (ovulation) in females and testosterone production in males.
