Renal colic - unilateral loin to groin pain
Colicky
Haematuria
N+V
Reduced UO

What investigations would you do?
Urine dipstick
Bloods - including serum calcium
Abdo XR - for calcium based scans
Non-contrast CT KUB
What is a risk factor for stones?
hypercalcaemia - calcium supplementation, hyperparathyroidism and cancer
What are pain management options?
NSAIDs - IM diclofenac
Opiates not very helpful
What is the management of stones <5mm
Watchful waiting
How long can it take for the stone to pass
several weeks
when are surgical options usually eequired?
10mm or larger
What medication can help aid pass stones?
tamsulosin - alpha blocker
What are surgical options?
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy - ESWL
Ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy PCNL - sometimes with nephostomy left in
Open surgery
