Attitude
These involve beliefs and values held about issues such as family, religion, behaviour etc.
Stereotype
A set view of a group of people e.g. All blondes are stupid.
Prejudice
Pre-judging
Judging someone of something because of inadequate facts or stereotypes.
Judging someone before you know them.
Discrimination
This involves activities that prevent members of a certain group from accessing the same benefits and rewards as others. Leading to unfair treatment of an individual.
Socialisation
The process by which people learn the cultural norms and values of the society into which they have been born.
Primary socialisation
This where children learn norms and values in the first years of their life from parents and guardians.
Children growing understanding of language, customs and practices of their family.
Any prejudices or stereotyping in the family may be passed on to the child.
Secondary socialisation
Child come to understand the social norms of the wider society, beyond their family.
They will learn what is expected of them and or change their attitudes/behaviours when they come into contact with others.
Direct discrimination
Obvious
Deliberately disadvantaging others through words and actions e.g. Verbal or not getting a job because your a women.
Indirect discrimination
Less obvious
Occurs when certain conditions are in place that disadvantage some people over others e.g. Hospital leaflets that are only available in English.
Institutional discrimination
When the structure, processes of procedures of an organisation put certain groups of people at a disadvantage.
Equality
Equality is having equal opportunities and rights. It is being treated fairly. It also means being able and supported to reach your potential.
Inequality
Inequality is when people aren’t given the equal opportunities and rights. They are treated unfairly and experience discrimination .
Victimisation
Treating someone differently because they have made a complaint about discrimination.
Harassment
Behaviour of an offensive nature intended to disturb or upset, which is usually repetitive.
Perception Discrimination
Treating someone less favourably because it is thought they have a certain protected characteristic e.g not offering someone a job because you think they are gay.
