How to promote confidentiality?
- Private room/doors shut when discussing private information.
- Store private information in a secure place e.g. In a locked cabinet or a password protected computer.
- No gossiping about patients personal details
- Only pass on information on a “need to know” basis.
What is meant by “need to know” basis?
Restricting who has access to private information
Only passing the information on to people who have a reason to know
E.G doctors may pass on private information to a surgeon before you have an operation.
Why is confidentiality important?
To avoid embarrassment
So you can trust professionals
Makes patients feel valued
It is your right …
It is the law - data protection act
To maintain a good reputation for the setting
Why can confidently be broken?
When a person is at risk of harm from others e.g. Abuse
When a person is at risk of harming others..
When a person is at risk of harming themselves
When a serious law is broken e.g a doctor found out your drug dealing or when serious crime is being committed.
