Physical barriers?
If someone is in a wheelchair and the service is not adapted e.g. No ramps.
No transport available for disability
Geographical barriers?
Live in a rural are where there are poor services available.
Post code lottery
Services not available in postcode where you live
Language/communication barriers?
English is not their first language
Deaf or blind service users struggle to communicate.
Medical conditions inhibits communication e.g stutter/stammer.
Not being able to understand medical terminology e.g. Such as a learning difficulty.
Cultural barriers?
Religious beliefs disagree with treatments on offered e.g. Jehouah witness won’t allow blood transfusion.
In certain cultures, women won’t want to be examined unless by female doctors.
Service may not provide for cultural needs e.g. No veggie/halal foods or no praying room.
Financial barriers?
If on low wage, may struggle to afford treatment or may not be able to pay for transport or car park.
Psychological barriers?
Fear of diagnosis e.g. What the test results will show ..
Fear of discrimination/ stigma attached to condition
Embarrassed about condition
May be unaware treatment is required.
