Why might people not report discrimination?
- Scared of victimisation
- Boss is the person doing the discrimination
- Might not report it because they didn’t know the behaviour was discriminatory.
- May not know your rights
- May not know how to complain or who to speak to
- Not want to get the person in trouble
- The cost of going to court and the time
Effects of discrimination
- Loss of confidence
- Low self esteem/ self worth.
- Angry/ annoyed
- Embarrassed
- Intimidated
- Scared
- Upset
- Not want to go back.
Direct discrimination
Obvious
Words or actions
Deliberately disadvantaging another
E.G verbal or not getting a job because you are a women.
Indirect discrimination
Not obvious
Occurs when certain conditions are in place that disadvantage some people over others.
E.G leaflets only available English or no ramps to access building.
Example of direct sex discrimination?
Not giving someone a job because they are a women.
Using sexiest language
Example of direct racial discrimination
Not giving someone a job because of their skintone.
Verbal abuse calling someone a nigga.
Example of direct disability discrimination.
Not giving someone a job because they are disabled
Verbal abuse calling someone useless.
Example of indirect sex discrimination.
An organisation not offering female toilets.
Job advert saying you have to be over 6ft to apply ( women don’t normally grow 6ft).
No career breaks ( women will usually have breaks when they have children).
Example of indirect racial discrimination.
A job which states no head gear should be worn ( Muslim females wear hijab).
Makeup counters that don’t have darker shade foundations.
Example of indirect I’ll disability discrimination
A building that doesn’t have a ramp ( meaning people in wheelchairs won’t be able to access it).
A building that doesn’t have disabled toilets.
