key words ! Flashcards
subjective
allowing emotions or feelings to interfere with research
objective
not allowing emotions or feelings to interfere with research
correlation co efficient
measures the strength of the relationship between two co - variables in a correlation +1 is a strong positive -1 is a strong negative and 0 is no correlation
independent variable
the variable the psychologist manipulates and controls to see how it affect behaviour
independent variable
the variable the psychologist MANIPULATES and CONTROLS to see how it affects behaviour
dependent variable
the variable which is measured by the psychologist
dependent variable
the variable which is measured by the psychologist
what is operationalisation of variables
giving a precise definition of the behaviour being measured. Allows for repetition and higher reliability
confounding variables
variables in a study that aren’t being measured or manipulated by the researcher that affect SOME ppts behaviours but not ALL. havinf negavtibe consequences for validity
non directional hypothesis
a hypothesis suggesting that an effect will occur, but doesn’t state a specific direction for results. eg alcohol affects reaction time
non directional hypothesis
a hypothesis suggests that there will be a relationship between variables, where the IV will affect the DV in one specific direction, eg alchaol slows reaction time
null hypothesis
a hypothesis suggests there will be no difference between variables, any that does occur does so by change eg. alcohol will have no effect on reaction time
what is a directional alternative hypothesis
It states the direction that the behaviour will go in, eg this behaviour WILL happen
what’s non directional alternative hypothesis
doesn’t state the direction that behaviour will go in, eg, something will happen but i’m not sure what
