Pilgrim
A person on a religious journey.

A journey by a believer to a religious journey.
Lent
40 days before Easter, in which we reflect the suffering of Jesus.
Rome
St Peter went to Rome to preach the faith, he was crucified and buried on a hill, now called Vatican.
Lourdes
A teenager, St Bernadette, saw 18 visions of a women who identifies herself as the Immaculate Conception.
Walsingham
Many Catholics believe that, Richeldis de Faverches, a Saxon noblewoman, had a vision in which she saw the house of Nazareth.
Jerusalem
Place where Jesus died.
Dramatised prayer
Catholics will often imitate, Jesus’ pilgrimage to the cross by praying the stations of the cross.
Kingdom of God
Where all people live as God intends.
Reign of God
The Lord’s Prayer
Is so called because Jesus taught it to his disciples, known as our father.
Justice
Bringing about what is right and fair, or making up wrong that has been committed.
Peace
A state of total trust and unity between all people.
Reconciliation
Restoring the harmony after relationships have broken down, also a sacrament in the Catholic Church.
Hierarchy of the Church
A ranking system that gives structure to the Church.
Pope
Head of Catholic Church, successor of St Peter.
Cardinals
Help elect the next pope.
Bishop
Have power to confirm and ordain, help advise Pope on decisions.
Deacons
Preach the gospel, assist the priest, they can baptise people and marry people.
Lay People/The Laity
Baptised in the Church.
Second Vatican Council
A series of important meetings of all Catholic bishops between 1962 and 1965, which updated many Catholic teachings.
Dei Verbum
Word of God is communicated through scripture, tradition and the teaching authority of the church, all linked and directed by the Holy Spirit.
Lumen Gentium
Pope and bishop are there to serve people. Every member of the church is called to participate in the churches mission
Sacrosanctum Concilium
The people of God are to be involved in worship.
Gaudium et Spes
Church must read the signs of times and interpret the light of the gospel.
Immaculate Conception
A title given to Mary that refers to the belief that Mary was conceived without any physical intercourse.
Magnificat
The name of prayer Mary said when Elizabeth greeted her during her visit.
Apostolic Succession
The power of the apostles passed on to the next generations of bishops.
Four Marks of the Church
The nicene creed declared the church to be holy, one, catholic and apostolic.
Magisterium
The teaching authority of the Catholic Church, exercised by the Pope and the bishops.
Pontifical church
When the teachings of the church are presented by a pope.
Conciliar Church
When the authority off the magisterium is expressed through the pope in a council.
Vocation
A call from God to fulfil a particular role in life.
Church being apostolic
- “You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church!”
- 12 apostles were original foundation of the Church and witnesses to the faith.
- Apostolic and Apostolic succession is the foundation of Catholic beliefs.
- Authority of Popes and Bishops is known as magisterium.
- When the pope makes a rare declaration, he speaks on behalf of the magisterium and papal infallibility.
Church being one.
- All dioceses, parishes are all part of one church.
Church being holy.
- God is at work in the whole body of christ, in both individuals and in the community.
- Presence of God makes Church holy.
Church being Catholic
- Church is worldwide.
- Teachings of the church are the beliefs held by catholics everywhere.
