  • Some saints are holding weapons that lead to their death, standing next to Jesus.
  • However, they all have perfect bodies, despite the fact they have been tortured with weapons it shows that resurrection will be renewed.

The Faithful in Michelangelo’s Last Judgement

  • Rest of the painting refers to the parable of the sheep and the goats, the good on his right and the bad to his left.
  • At the bottom are people who were dead being raised for judgement by Christ. People in the graves gives the depiction that all people will be raised on the last day.
  • Jesus right hand is raised showing that he has the power to raise people from the dead and the people on his right will be risen to heaven.
  • Archangel Michael has a book of people going to heaven which is smaller than the book of people going to hell which is held by the other angels.

The Condemned in Michelangelo’s Last Judgement

  • On the right of the painting are people who are destined to go to hell, shown by facial expressions and the way they hold their bodies.
  • MA doesn’t show hell but there is a gaping blackness that shows a gateway to hell beyond which people won’t be able to return.
  • No ligt in in it suggesting that the light of Christ cannot reach people who have rejected God.

  • Death; The earthly body will come to an end, this is not the end of an individual. It is a new phase of eternal life without the limitations of the earthly body.

  • Heaven; The state of eternal happiness in the presence of God.
  • Hell; The state of total separation from God.

  • End of mass, Priest will pray asking any sins by the deceased individual may be forgiven.
  • Coffin sprinkled again with holy water as a symbol of baptism.
  • Priest waves smoke over coffin of burning incense.
  • Rising smoke of the incense represents the prayers of the faithful being offered up to god on the behalf of the deceased.
  • As the coffin is blessed congregation sing ‘May the angels lead you to paradise and with poor man Lazarus of old may you enjoy eternal life.’
  • Prayer said for the mourners, that they may live in the hope that they will meet with the deceased again in the new life of heaven.
