What is the Key Question?
- Is the influence of role models and celebrities something that causes anorexia?
What is anorexia?
→ Anorexia is an eating disorder, symptoms weight-loss, anxiety, body-imaged, distraction.
→ It is associated with food and weight gain.
What is the Western Culture like?
→ tends to focus on dieting and body culture.
→ Digitally retouched photos are the norm in society and this can have a negative influence on individuals.
How might society look at role models?
- may look at role models and be influenced by them.
- They may believe in order to look like the role models they should copy their life style which is not always good for an individuals as they may make changes that their body cannot cope with.
What are some statistics of anorexia?
- 6.4% of adults displayed symptoms
- common in western culture
- 19% of British girls are anorexic
- 40 in 100,000 , 10-14 year old are diagnosed with eating disorders
- 90-95% of those with anorexia are females
Who would be the role models?
- Celebrities or models as they are seen to have prestige and the behaviour that they model is likely to be intimidated.
- If the model is punished then this could stop the behaviour.
How would the four stages of SLT apply to this behaviour?
- ATTENTION: paying attention to the models
- RETENTION: remembering the size of the models
- REPRODUCTION - actively making action
- MOTIVATION
How could vicarious reinforcement be applied to explain the cause of anorexia?
- Thinness is rewarded; being overweight is punished.
- This means people will believe in order to be rewarded, they will have to stay thin and in order to achieve this they will have to lose weight.
What would be positive reinforcement for anorexia?
- receive praise from people for losing wight
What would be the negative reinforcements to continue to have anorexia?
- Not eating which can result in attention and this attention is reinforced.
- Losing that fear of eating
- less hunger
