Bandura - 1965 Flashcards
1
Q
What was the aim of the study?
A
- To see if reinforcement administered to a model influences the performances but not the acquisition of matching responses.
2
Q
What was the sample like?
A
- 33 boys and 33 girls (42 - 71 months)
3
Q
What was the procedure?
A
- Children brought individually into a semi-dark room. Experimenter informed children she had to attend somewhere else before they could go to the surprise room.
- The waiting period - they watched a tv program
- the model in the program hit the doll with a mallet. The sequence of physically and verbally aggressive behaviour was replaced twice rewarding and punishing contingencies.
- children in the model reward condition, a second adult gave the children 7 UP. The model repeated the behaviour.
- Children in the no - consequence condition viewed the same film as shown to the other groups except no reinforcement ending was included.
4
Q
What were the results?
A
- The main effect of sex is highly significant, confirming the prediction that boys would perform more imitative responses than girls.
- Subjects in both these conditions performed significantly more matching responses than children who observed the model.
5
Q
What were the conclusions from the experiment?
A
- Children left with the Bobo Doll and props used by adult aggressor, they imitated the actions they had witnesses.
- Further testing indicated that children in each condition has equal amounts of learning and it was only the motivation factor that kept behaviors from being similar in each condition.
