Capafons Flashcards
1
Q
What is the aim?
A
- To validate the effectiveness of systematic desentisation as a treatment for the fear of flying
2
Q
What was the sample like?
A
- 41 participants
- 20 of these (8 males and 12 females) were randomly assigned to a treatment group (the group that would be subject to the systematic desentisation therapy)
- The remaining 21 (9 males and 12 females) were assigned to the control group (waiting for systematic desentisation therapy)
3
Q
How were the participants recruited?
A
- Recruited via a media campaign (VOLUNTEER SAMPLE), which informed them of the opportunity to take part in a free of charge intervention programme aimed at treating the fear of flying.
4
Q
What was the diagnostic scale composed of?
A
- IDG-FV
- EMV
- EPAV
5
Q
What is IDG-FV?
A
- a spanish general diganostic information tool on the fear of flying
6
Q
What is the EMV scale?
A
- measures of assessing the dependent variable pre and post treament: fear displayed during the flight; fear of flight preliminaries; fear without involvement
7
Q
What is the EPAV scale?
A
scales of expectations of danger and anxiety.
- Measure the occurrence of catastrophic thoughts
8
Q
What was the procedure?
A
- Diagnosis scale used to assess their fear of flying -> IDG-FV, EMV, EPAV
- participants were interviewed individually and completed the IDG-FV
- came back to watch a video of a plane trip + before the video, their heart rate, temperature, muscle tension was measured for 3 minutes prior
- At the end of the video an interview appointment was made
- the Interval between pre and post tests session was about 8 weeks
- For the treatment group, this was 2 one hour sessions a week (12-15 in total), these involved breathing techniques, muscle relaxation and imagination
- after 8 weeks both gropos took the questionnaire + stimulated video test
9
Q
What were the results?
A
- For the control group, the ‘mere passing of time; led to no reduction, the groups with forms of treatment had reduced level of fear (with the exception of 2)
10
Q
What was the conclusions?
A
- Systematic desentisation is an effective treatment for decreasing or eradicating fear of flying but it is not infallible given that 10% of participants were wrongly classified
