Key Question Flashcards
Intro
Dyslexia is a difficulty with reading, speech, manipulating sound, problem w STM and phonological awareness
WMM can be used to help children w dyslexia by adapting teaching for WM deficits and focus on tasks using less STM
Dyslexia makes learning much harder
Holme
WM involved in so much processed in reading
Problems holding info in STM
How memory links together and explains lots of difficulties
WMM - if VSS and PL don’t link together properly then memories cannot be linked and stored
Sebastian and Hernandez Gil
Digit span increases with age and what it is at ages
E.g if digit span for 6 year old is lower than average it could suggest that there is an issue with working memory
Sebastian and Hernandez Gil
Spanish kids remembered lower as more syllables
Dyslexia would effect working memory as they cannot store auditory information as well
So it would be similar to how it was more difficult the more syllables
Intervention classroom approach
Dunning said to avoid lengthy explanations so as not to avoid the PL
And to simplify tasks so it doesn’t overwhelm the limited WM capacity
Direct intervention
Klinsberg
Programmes in computers to target a range of WM skills
Enhancing WM
Could help children with dyslexia to perform better
Conclusion
If we learn how to better deal with students with dyslexia and how to give them methods in order to help them learn better it means that children with dyslexia will not be left to struggle in school with tasks that are more difficult for them
Question
How can knowledge of working memory be used to inform the treatment of dyslexia?
