Key enzyme concepts/definitions Flashcards
1
Q
Irreversible inhibitors
A
- combine covalently with enzyme to irreversible inactivate the enzyme.
example is suicide inhibitor
2
Q
suicide inhibitor
A
form of irreversible inhibitor in which the inhibitor is unreactive until it is acted upon by the enzymatic mechanism, which causes the inhibitor to covalently bind permanently
3
Q
apoenzyme
A
an enzyme that is missing something, such as the cofactor.o
4
Q
holoenzyme
A
the whole enzyme with no missing parts such as the cofactor
5
Q
zymogen
A
- inactived form of an enzyme, typically a digestive enzyme.
This enzyme is not activated until it reached its location of use, because it is a protease. If it is activated before reaching the point of use, this enzyme may have digestive effects on the surrounding organs. It is activated by an already active copy of itself, which cleaves off a piece of the zymogen tht was keeping it from activation.
can be recognized with -ogen or pro-.
6
Q
Cofactor
A
- metal ions, other organic molecules other than vitamin derivs
7
Q
coenzyme
A
- vitamin derivative, subset of cofactor
8
Q
prosthetic group
A
- nonprotein covalently bonded to a protein, act as carriers
example is a heme prosthetic group that is covalently attached through side chain interactions to a protein, this prosthetic group is an iron atom surrounde by a protoporphyrin ring
