New Frontier. Aid to education, federal support of health care, urban renewal, and civil rights. Died in Congress. Later passed on by LBG. Economically, stimulated by defense and space exploration (BOOM). Clean Air Act, Green Berets, etc.
What were Kennedy’s foreign accomplishments?
Peace Corps, foreign aid programs. Bay of Pigs (failure). Met Krushchev to take out troops; refusal. Up goes Berlin Wall. Cuban Missile Crisis.
Describe Kennedy’s approach to civil rights.
Not to press civil rights lest alienate white voters. Didn’t want it to affect American prestige versus communism.
What did the Peace Corps signify?
The Peace Corps exemplified the new Frontier’s liberal anticommunism in third world nations.
What was Kennedy’s approach to Vietnam?
Believed in the Domino Theory. Had weapons and facilities in Vietnam but no action. ‘Strategic hamlets’

Had to create a civil rights bill or else he wasn’t really a liberal. Civil Rights Act of 1964: banned discrimination and segregation in public accomodations.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act: aid for poor school districts

LBJ and Hubert humphrey with clear liberal. Barry Goldwater, republican, end welfare state, TVA and Social Security = dangerous extremist? LBG won by landslide. Democrats controlled both houses of Congress to pass economic and social reform.
Describe the urban race riots from 64-68.
Influenced by Malcolm X. More violence and racial separatism. Lead by militants. Kerner Commission concluded that racism and segregation were the causes of riots. Not caused by LAW but by ATTITUDES.
What happened during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi?
Organized by CORE and SNCC to get right to vote. Harrassed by Missiissipi jlfdl;ad officials and KKK = firebombing and arrests.

Violence instigated by Yippies (Youth International Party led by Abbie Hoffman). Sought to ridicule political system and discredit Democrats.
