kant 2 Flashcards
. What does Kant mean when he says that “every rational being exists an end in himself”?
Explain this in terms of the third formulation of the categorical imperative (pg. 36/429).
People exist in an end for his own goals, not to be used as ends/ objects of other peoples ends. We cannot use each other . We have to respect them as free moral beings.
Third formulation of categorical imperitive:
- How does the above formulation figure in to the previous example provided by Kant concerning suicide?
when committing suicide you are treating yourself as a disposable thing. every rational being has the same worth.
- How does the above formulation figure in to the previous example provided by Kant concerning lying?
we lie to people and when we do so we are using them as a means to an end. We are not respecting them as a rational being with feelings.
- Describe the kingdom of ends, which is the fourth formulation of the categorical imperative for Kant
When all society lives according to categorical imperitive.
systematic union of rational beings. He believes that in this society you can have your own dreams and goals while still respecting everyone.
