Kant 1 Flashcards
- What is the only thing that is good without qualification? What does that mean? What makes it good?
The good will. we all have reason and therefore will. The drive behind our actions.
Good will is that the act of willing is good in itself.
- What does Kant think about happiness as the goal of action? (What would he say to Aristotle, for example?)
It is not the end goal because happiness is satifsying our desire(inclination). Because this is all conditonal to reach happiness. 1 you are wrong that happiness is the end goal because you’ll never be satisfied.2. If there is a villian that is courageous. A collection of virtues means nothing if you do not have a good will!
- What does the example of the shopkeeper and the inexperienced purchaser teach us about acting according to duty?
shop keeper considers overcharging the inexperienced shoppers, but then decides that he will not, and charge everyone equally. This is the right thing to do, and you act out of duty.
- What does the example of the hopelessly sorrowful person who preserves his life nevertheless teach us?
rational duty to not kill yourself. If inclination and duty counter each other, but you act on duty that is evidence that you are virtuous. So you can still be a virtuous person and the inclination and duty line up, but to evidence you are virtuous is that you act against inclination to follow duty.
.
- How does Kant utilize the teaching of Jesus to love our neighbors and our enemies?
Inclination is to hate them, but when you love them you are following your duty, and this is strong evidence that you are virtuous. You love your enemy via rationally. See them as a rational being, one that deserves respect.
