Justice Flashcards
Demonstrates Othello’s commitment to justice as he needs proof of Desdemona’s infidelity.
“be sure thou prove my love a whore; / Be sure of it. Give me the ocular proof”
Othello is convincing himself that what he is about to do is right. It links to the previous statement that Emilia has made about how people are never jealous for the cause. He is trying to conceal his innate jealousy.
“It is the cause, it is the cause, my soul: / Let me not name it to you, you chaste stars. / It is the cause.”
Othello believes that Desdemona is lying to him when she is trying to prove his innocence. If she is telling the truth then that would make him a murderer. But he sees her death as necessary
“O perjur’d woman! Thou dost stone my heart, / And mak’st me call what I intend to do / A murder, which I thought a sacrifice.”
