Deception and treachery Flashcards
Iago sounds genuinely concerned for Roderigo’s welfare. This contrasts with the use of derogatory language on Iago’s part towards Roderigo that confirm Iago is only using him for his own personal profit.
“No more of drowning, do you hear?”
“Thus do I ever make my fool my purse” “snipe”
Othello believes Iago to be completely honest and trustworthy while Iago is just playing Othello’s good side as part of a plan to get his revenge.
“Iago is most honest.”
“I follow him to serve my turn upon him”
Iago has a plan to portray Desdemona and Cassio’s relationship as an affair when really that just have an innocent friendship
“With as little a web as this will I ensnare as great a fly as / Cassio.”
” ‘Tis my breeding / That gives me this bold show of courtesy.”
Iago was trying to get Cassio drunk and then portrayed to Montano that Cassio has a drinking problem
“If I can fasten but one cup upon him”
“He is a soldier fit to stand by Caesar / And give direction. And do but see his vice- / ‘Tis to his virtue a just equinox”
Iago planted Desdemona’s handkerchief in Cassio’s lodging and he gave it to Bianca, but to Othello standing watching it looks like Desdemona gave Cassio the handkerchief and then he gave it away to Bianca
“I will in Cassio’s lodging lose this napkin”
“This is / some minx’s token”
Iago says a suggestive comment that leaves Othello’s mind to fill in the blanks, practically controlling Othello’s thoughts by putting false images in his head.
“With her, on her, what you will.”
“Zounds, that’s fulsome!” “Work on, / My medicine, work!”
Othello’s who is standing in the distance sees a conversation between Iago and Cassio and believes they are laughing about his affair with Desdemona when in fact they are talking about Cassio’s relationship with Bianca.
“Crying ‘O dear Cassio!’ as it were. His gesture / imports it.”
“Now will I question Cassio of Bianca”
