What types of cases are tried in Crown Court?
Most serious criminal cases, such as murder, rape, and section 18 offences.
What happens in a case of jury tampering, according to R v Twomey?
The right to a jury trial can be lost if there is a risk of jury tampering.
What is the process once the jury has been sworn in?
The jury listens to the prosecution and defence evidence, witness testimonies, and the judge’s summing up.
What happens after the jury hears the evidence?
The jury retires to the jury room, appoints a foreman, and deliberates on the case.
What if the jury cannot reach a unanimous verdict?
If the jury cannot reach a unanimous verdict after 2 hours, a majority verdict can be accepted under s.17 Juries Act 1974 (e.g., 11-1 or 10-2).
Who returns the verdict in court?
The foreman of the jury will return the verdict in court and is not required to give a reason for the verdict.
What happens after the verdict is returned?
The jury is discharged and returns to the assembly area if their period of jury service has not expired.
What does the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 say about jury members discussing the case?
It is an offence for jury members to discuss or research the case outside court, including on social media.
