JOYCE TRAVELBEE AND LYDIA HALL Flashcards
theory is based on the
belief that nursing is
accomplished by
relationships between
humans through a series of
interactions.
The theory teaches nurses to
understand the meaning of
suffering and illness.
Human-to-Human Relationship Theory
to assist an individual,
family, or community to prevent or cope with the
experiences of illness and suffering and, if necessary, to
find meaning in these experiences, with the ultimate
goal being the presence of hope.
The goal of nursing
5 Stages of the Interaction Process
Original Encounter
Emerging Identities
Empathy
Sympathy
Establish Rapport
First impression by the nurse of the
sick person and vice-versa.
* The nurse utilizes emotional
knowledge in order to create and
cultivate a meaningful relationship
during the initial encounter and
interaction
* May or may not be positive, and
may or may not initially establish a
connection
Original Encounter
The time when the nurse-patient
relationship begins
* Both the nurse and the patient
perceive each other as a unique
person; bonds begin to form
* The nurse must be able to
separate himself/herself and
his/her own experiences from
others
Emerging Identities
- Human sharing of another’s
psychological state without
sharing the same feelings
*The individuals relate to one
another and to separate
experiences
Empathy
The nurse is able to share, feel,
and experience what the person
is experiencing
* The nurse has the desire to
alleviate the cause of the
patient’s illness or suffering
* The nurse “translates
sympathy” into nursing tasks
Sympathy
Includes all the shared
experiences, thoughts, attitudes,
and feelings between the nurse
and the patient throughout all
interactions
* Nursing actions are done to
relieve the patient’s distress
* The sick person shows trust and
confidence in the nurse.
Establishing Rapport
“the Three Cs of Lydia Hall.”
Care, Cure, Core Theory
The patient receiving nursing care.
- Has goals set by him or herself
rather than by any other person and
behaves according to their feelings
and values. - This involves the therapeutic use of
self and is shared with other
members of the health team.
Core
This can help the patient verbally
express feelings regarding the
disease process and its effects by
using the
reflective technique.
The attention given to patients by medical
professionals.
- The nurse shares the ____ circle with other
health professionals, such as physicians or
physical therapists. - These are the interventions or actions
geared toward treating the patient for
whatever illness or disease they are suffering
from.
Cure
Addresses the role of nurses and is
focused on performing the task of
nurturing patients.
- Nurturing involves using the factors
that make up the concept of
mothering (care and comfort of the
person) and provide for teaching-
learning activities.
