Joints Flashcards
Where are Joints formed?
They are formed where two or more bones meet.
What are the two functions of Joints,
The two functions of joints are stability and mobility.
What are the THREE STRUCTUAL classifications of joints?
The three structural classifications are:
Fibrous,
cartilaginous
and synovial
What are the three FUNCTIONAL classifications of joints?
The three FUNCTIONAL classifications of joints are:
Synarthrosis (immovable)
Ampiathrosis (slightly moveable)
Diathrosis (freely moveable)
What are the general structures of a SYNOVIAL JOINT?
The Articular Cartilage Joint Cavity (contains synovial fluid) The articular capsule which contains: 1. fibrous layer and 2. synovial membrane.
What are the THREE types of fibrous joints and provide examples.
- Suture - junctions in the skull
- Syndemosis - anterior tibiofibular ligament
- Gomphosis - tooth socket is the only example
Describe the SUTURE joint
held together by very short, interconnecting fibres and bone edges interlock.
FOUND IN SKULL
Describe SYNDESMOSIS joints
Held by a ligament. Length varies.
Describe the GOMPHOSIS joints
Gomphosis joints are described as “peg in socket” fibrous joiint. Only found in the the TEETH.
What are the 2 CARTILAGINEOUS joints
Primary or SYNCHONDROSES
Secondary or SYMPHYSES
Are Synathrosis joints moveable?
No. Synathrosis joints are completely immovable. These are located in the skull and teeth.
