Central Nervous System - Brain and Spinal cord Flashcards
What are the two parts contained within the Central Nervous System.
The brain and spinal cord.
What are the regions of the brain?
The cerebrum
The cerebellum
The brain stem
The diencephalon - Thalamus and hypothalmus
Where is the cerebrum located?
The cerebrum is the top part
Where is the cerebellum located
Towards the back above the brain stem and under the cerebrum
Where is the diencaphalon located?
Between the brain stem and teh cerebrum. Hypothalamus is located in the upper region, the thalamus is below.
What is the function of the cerebrum?
The function of the cerebrum is for individual skeletal muscle movement, general senses, hearing, equlbrium and vision.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Coordination of skeletal muscle movement.
What is the function of the diencephalon?
The thalamus is the relay centre for sensory information, except smell
The Hypothalamus is the autonomic nervous system control centre.
What is the function of the brain stem?
Midbrain - visual reflex
Pons - secondary respriatory centre
Medulla oblongata - primary respiratory centre and cardiovascular system
Where does the spinal cord start and finish?
Extends from foramen magnum of skull to the level of L1/2 vertebra in adults
What are the two forms of matter within the spinal cord?
White and Grey matter
What does grey matter contain?
Contains non-myelinated axons, as well as the neuron soma (cell body), synapses, and local wiring, such as dendrites
What does white matter contain?
contains mostly myelinated axons
What type of matter is found within the brain?
Cerebrum has islands of grey matter within the white nuclei, and an outer cortex of grey matter
What sort of matter is located within the brainstem?
Has additional regions of grey matter in the white matter
