Histology - Bone Flashcards
What are the four components of Compact bone
- Lamellae (The rings)
- Lacuna (cavaties containing osteocytes)
- Central Canal (contains nerves and blood vessels)
- Canaliculi (passageway between lacunae)
What is the name of the structure of what is contained in compact bones?
An osteon or Haversian system
What is the name of the structures contained in Spongy Bone?
Trabeculae - less dense
Within Spongy Bone, name the three cells contained within the trabecular
- Osteocyte
- Osteoclast
- Osteoblast
Within Spongy Bone, name the three non-cell “things” within
- Lamellae
- Lacuna
- Canaliculi
List the four cells of bone tissue
Osteocytes
Osteoblasts
Osteoclasts
Osteoprogenitor cells
What is located in the extra-cellular matrix of compact bone
Within the extra cellular matrix of bone is a gel like ground substance with inorganic salts which contains collagen fibres.
What is the function of osteoblasts?
Bone producing cells. They function to synthetsize and secrete collagen fibres and other organic components. Initiate calcification.
What is the function of Osteogenic cells?
They undergo cell division and develop into osteoblasts.
What is the function of osteocytes?
Maintain daily metabolism of bone tissue, including exchange of nutrients and waste with the blood.
What is the function of osteoclasts?
Osteoclasts function to remove bone during bone growth.
