Histology - Cartilage Flashcards
What are the three viarities of Cartilage?
The three variaties of cartilage are Hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage and elastic cartilage.
What is the function of Hyaline cartilage?
The function of Hyaline cartilage is to provide support and reinforcement.
Where is the location of Hylanie cartilage?
Hyaline cartilage can be located at the end of long bones and support to respiratory passages.
What type of cell is found within the Lacunae of Hyaline cartilage?
Within the lacunae of hyaline cartilage are CHONDROCYTES
What makes up the extra cellular matrix of Hyaline cartilage?
It has lots of collagen fibres bound together by a resillient, gel like substance and is usually covered in perichondrium.
What is fibrocartilage made up of?
Fibrocartilage is made up of thick bundles of collagen fibres, intersped with chondrocytes within their lacunae.
What is the function of fibrocartilage?
It the strongest type of cartilage and provides strength and rigidity.
Where is fibrocartilage located?
Fibrocartilage is located in the intervertebral discs, tendon attachment to bones and junction between flat bones of the pelvis.
Does fibrocartilage contain a perichondrium?
Fibrocartilage DOES NOT contain a perichondrium.
What is elastic cartilage made up of?
Elastic cartilage is made up of a thread-like network of elastic and collagen fibres, intersped with chondrocytes in their lacunae.
Does elastic cartilage have perichondrium?
Elastic cartilage IS covered by perichondrium.
Where is elastic cartilage located?
Elastic cartilage is located in the external auditory meatus and the epiglttis of the larynx.
