Joint Mobilizations (2) Flashcards
What do you assess in manual therapy?
Motion
Pain
Functional outcomes
What is OMPT?
Any hands on treatment provided by the PT (manipulations, joint mobilizations, stretching)
What altered mechanics can manual therapy address?
Pain and muscle guarding
Joint effusion
Adhesions in the joint capsule
Malalignment or subluxation of bony surfaces
Angular stretching
Lever increases force at joint
Can cause excessive joint compression
Roll without a slide does not replicate normal function
Joint mobilization
Force applied to joint at an intensity concurrent with pathology
Direction of mobilization can mimic slide
Selective application
What are the neurophysiological effects of joint mobilization?
Stimulate mechanoreceptors
Inhibit nociceptive stimuli
Small amplitude oscillations
What are the mechanical effects of joint mobilization?
Motion of synovial fluid (small amplitude)
Re arrange collagenous fibers in joint capsule (large amplitude)
What are some contraindications of joint mobilization?
Inflammatory arthritis
Tuberculosis
Osteoporosis
Bone fracture
Joint effusion
What is a grade 1 mobilization?
Small amp, out of resistance, PAIN
What is a grade 2 mobilization?
Large amp, out of resistance, PAIN
What is a grade 3 mobilization?
Large amp, out of resistance, MOTION
What is a grade 4 mobilization?
Small amp, into resistance, MOTION
What is a grade 5 mobilization?
Manipulation, pushes beyond restrictive barrier
What grade mobilization is best used for pain?
Grade 1 and 2
What grade of mobilization is best used for motion?
Grade 3 and 4
