Joint Descriptions Flashcards
Fibrous
No synovial (joint) cavity; bones held together by a thin layer of fibrous tissue or dense fibrous tissue
Suture
Found only between bones of the skull; articulating bones separated by a thin layer of fibrous tissue
Syndesmosis
Articulating bones united by dense fibrous tissue
Gomphosis
Cone-shaped peg fits into a socket; articulating bones separated by peridontal ligament
Cartilaginous
No synovial cavity; articulating bones united by cartilage
Synchondrosis
Connecting material is hyaline
Symphysis
Connecting material is broad, flat disc of fibrocartilage
Synovial
Synovial caity and articular cartilage present; articular capsule composed of an outer fibrous capsule and an inner synovial membrane; may contain accessory ligaments, articular discs (menisci), and bursae
Gliding
Articulating surfaces usually flat
Hinge
Spool like surface fits into a concave surface
Pivot
Rounded, pointed, or concave surface fits into a ring formed partly by bone and partly by a ligament
Ellipsoidal
Oval-shaped condyle fits into an elliptical cavity
Saddle
Articular surface of one bone is saddle-shaped, and the articular surface of the other bone is shaped like a rider sitting in the saddle
Ball-and-Socket
Ball-like surface fits into a cup-like depression
