John Flashcards

Q

What passages in John 1 states if or when the Word of God had a beginning?

A

John 1:1-3
[1]In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2]The same was in the beginning with God.
[3]All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Everything that exists was created by the Word. Before creation was timelessness and eternity. Therefore, there was no point in time when the Word began. The Word was always in existence.

Q

A popular argument by anti-trinitarians is that the “everything which was created” written in John 1 is only referring to the physical universe and will utilize Genesis 1 to validate this position in attempts to prove that the Word was indeed ‘created’ and dwelled in the heavens before Earth. What verses in the Bible clearly disproves this assertion?

A

The Genesis accounts of all creation including the spiritual heavens and their hosts.

Genesis 1:1
[1]In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Genesis 2:1
[1]Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Psalms further elaborates who are these hosts

Psalms 103:20-21
[20]Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
[21]Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

So in John 1:3 that states, “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made”, the Genesis account includes the heavens and all the angels as well as the physical universe. The Word pre-existed before all of it and not created in the heavens.

Psalms 148:1-2
[1]Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.
[2]Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

Q

According to John, what is the illumination and life of man called? From where did it originate from and what other verse in the bible can this parallel be found?
What is the implication of the parallel?

A

The illumination and light of man is called the light which originates from within the Word.

John 1:4
[4]In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

This parallels closely with Psalms 36:9 which speaks of Jehovah. The implication is that the Word is Jehovah as the Word.
Psalms 36:9
[9]For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.

Q

Generally speaking, why did the authors of the New Testament write it in Greek?

A

It was best for the apostles to preach the gospels to all nations in Greek since it was the most commonly used language at that time. Many Jews couldn’t even read Hebrew anymore and was already accustomed to Greek scriptures. About 300 years earlier a translation of the Old Testament into Greek had already begun and completed around 200BC known as the Septuagint.

Q

What is Logos? How was it perceived in Greek thought and how is it translated in english?

How is it referred to in scripture?

A

The english word Logic defined as the proper or reasonable way of rationally thinking about something derives from the Greek word Logos. To the Greeks Logos was perceived similarly but on a grandeur scale.
Logos was that divine reason that permeates the entire cosmos giving it’s order, meaning, form, and purpose. It is the unspoken rationale reasoning behind everything.

In Greek the Word is the Logos. John 1:1 is read as
“In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God.”

This is significant in the later chapters of the gospels because the claim is not only is this divine rationale reasoning eternal because it pre-existed all of creation as we know it, it only represents a particular person from the God-Head who in accordance God’s Logic later became flesh.

Q

In the following verses, what three words are synonymous with each other?

John 3:16-21
[16]For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
[17]For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
[18]He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
[19]And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
[20]For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
[21]But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

John 1:9-14
[9]That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
[10]He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
[11]He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
[12]But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
[13]Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
[14]And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
