God the Son Flashcards
What can be concluded when cross referencing these passages from the old and the new testament with consistency?
OLD TESTAMENT
Isaiah 44:24
[24]Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
Nehemiah 9:6
[6]Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
Isaiah 42:5
[5]Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
Isaiah 45:12,18
[12]I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.
[18]For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
Isaiah 48:12-13
[12]Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
[13]Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.
Isaiah 43:20-21
[20]The beast of the field shall honour me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen.
[21]This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.
NEW TESTAMENT
Colossians 1:15-17
[15]Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
[16]For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
[17]And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Here in Colossians Paul is saying that all things were created through and for Jesus Christ. He exhausts the language emphasizing how all thing visible and unseen in the heavens and earth was made by Jesus implying that Jesus existed before all creation. Yet we know that Paul was also a firm believer of the God in Hebrew scripture. Numerous passages in the old testament clearly states that the LORD created all thing by himself alone without any help. The only consistent conclusion when cross referencing what Paul writes in the New Testament with what he believes of the old Hebrew scripture is that Jesus is the God of the Old Testament in the flesh.
It must also be noted that in Paul’s theology Jesus is not the Father nor the Holy Spirit who in their own rights is also God. Jesus is the Son.
Colossians 1:15
[15]Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
What then does “firstborn” mean if Paul doesn’t believe Jesus to be the first one born of creatures? Are there any other meanings of this word?
Firstborn can mean:
1) First one born to your father
2) The heir of a inheritance.
Deuteronomy 21:15-17
[15]If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
[16]Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:
[17]But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
3) The one who has preeminence over the rest in a family.
1 Chronicles 5:1-3
[1]Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.
[2]For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph’s:)
[3]The sons, I say, of Reuben the firstborn of Israel were, Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
Psalms 89:19-20,26-27
[19]Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
[20]I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:
[26]He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.
[27]Also I will make him (David) my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
The term firstborn used to describe Jesus is used to describe his preeminence over everything he created. He is heir and inherits all of creation because he created it. This is expressed later in the chapter.
Colossians 1:16-18
[16]For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
[17]And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
[18]And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
In what sense is David considered the firstborn?
David was not the first child of his household nor was he the first king of Israel. He is regarded as the firstborn because he was exalted higher than all the kings. He is preeminent over all kings.
How would you explain in normal language the following verses?
Colossians 1:12-15
[12]Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
[13]Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
[14]In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
[15]Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
The triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit created everything for the glory and love of the Son. All of creation is a token and demonstration of the love the Father has for the Son. As an inheritor of all creation the expression of love in return to the Father is to redeem and preserve as much of creation so it will never be lost and it will never perish. We are part of that expression of Love the Father created for the Son. Further everlasting love, life, and redemption for us is to partake in the Love the Son has for the Father by the shedding his own blood to save what was made for him.
What is being expressed in the following verse?
Hebrews 1:1-3
[1]God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
[2]Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
[3]Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
The Son created all things and by rights is the heir of all things
Why would it be foolish to become conceited for any talents or gifts that you have?
Because every gift and talent is distributed by the Holy Spirit from heaven above.
James 1:17
[17]Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
John 3:27
[27]John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
1 Corinthians 4:6-7
[6]And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another.
[7]For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it?
Why is Jesus being depicted as a Lamb who was slain?
Revelation 5:6
[6]And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Revelation 5:9-10
[9]And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
[10]And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
He is being depicted as the new Passover Lamb and the new Exodus from Exodus 12.
What do these verses reveal about who is being worshipped?
Revelation 5:8-14
[8]And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
[9]And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
[10]And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
[11]And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
[12]Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
[13]And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
[14]And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
That the Lamb must be something more than a creature if God permitted all the angels and every creature to bow down to him in Heaven. That would be blasphemous and idolatry. Also, if Jesus was part of creation he would be included on the side with every other creature worshipping God. Yet he is described on the other side with his own throne. This type of worship would only make sense if the Lamb whom every creature gave glory to was also God.
John 5:22-23
[22]For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
[23]That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
Exodus 34:14
[14]For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:
2 Kings 17:35-36
[35]With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
[36]But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
The following verses describes how the blood of Jesus brought salvation and redemption to a vast uncountable amount of people. Where in scriptures does it say that this type of work is humanly impossible and can only be done by God alone
Revelation 5:9-10
[9]And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
[10]And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Revelation 7:9-10
[9]After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
[10]And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.
Psalms 3:8
[8]Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.
Jonah 2:9
[9]But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
Psalms 49:7-9,15
[7]None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
8
[9]That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
[15]But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
Revelation 1:17-18
[17]And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
[18]I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Revelation 21:6-7
[6]And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
[7]He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
Where in Hebrew scriptures did God use the title of being the “first and the last”?
Isaiah 44:6
[6]Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
Isaiah 48:12
[12]Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
Revelation 22:6-7,16
[6]And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
[7]Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
[16]I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
What can be concluded as parallel and the same within these verses?
That the Lord God of the holy of prophets who sent his angel to show unto his servants the things which must be shortly done (verse 6) is Jesus who sent his angel to testify unto you these things in the churches (verse 16).
What was Paul trying to convey in this verse?
1 Corinthians 12:3
[3]Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
What Paul is saying is that a genuine confession that Jesus is Lord in addition with attempts to act in a manner in sync with this confession is done by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is the work of the Holy Spirit that genuinely leads people to confess that Jesus is Yahweh, the God of the old testament.
What kind of attributes must this Holy Spirit have to be able to do the things in the following verses? What else is unique about this Spirit?
1 Corinthians 12:3-13
[3]Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
[4]Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
[5]And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
[6]And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
[7]But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
[8]For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
[9]To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
[10]To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
[11]But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
[12]For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
[13]For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
The variety of lavish gifts that is distributed among members of the body of Christ is from one Spirit. It is also the Spirit who determines who will receive what gifts. He is the one who inspires. In order for a Spirit to be present with each believer at the same time providing gifts along with empowering each member to act upon these gifts means that this spirit must be omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. These attributes are only reserved for God alone.
In addition, according to verse (11)this Spirit has it’s own will. This implies a distinction within God which validates the belief of a Trinity that is within God.
Hebrews 1:3
[3]Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
What is the meaning of “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person…”?
Where is it recorded of Paul agreeing and making this same statement?
Where is it recorded of Jesus agreeing and making this same statement?
That Jesus is the perfect visible image and representative of who God is. He perfectly displays, manifests, and radiates in visible form the character of God the Father and the Holy Spirit, who by nature is invisible. If someone wanted to know who God is they would have to direct themselves towards Jesus.
Paul wrote a similar statement in
Colossians 1:15
[15]Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Jesus is recorded saying this in
John 14:7-14
[7]If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
[8]Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
[9]Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
[10]Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
[11]Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
[12]Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
[13]And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
[14]If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Jesus is able to perfectly reflect and manifest the nature and will of God. Since he is his own person, is he able to do otherwise?
Jesus’ Will cannot be contrary to the Will of the Father nor the Holy Spirit. The three are perfectly united in Love glorifying each other as One God with the same goal and purpose. Therefore, Jesus only does those things that is in perfect alignment with the Will of the Father and the Holy Spirit. He cannot choose otherwise.
John 5:19
[19]Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
John 16:14-15
[14]He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
[15]All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
