Adam&Eve, Jesus&Mary Flashcards

1
Q

Why is Eve called ‘woman’?

Genesis 2:21-23
[21]And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
[22]And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
[23]And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

A

She derived from the bones and flesh from man. From the “womb of man”; hence, woman. Equal in nature, essence, and value as Adam.

Q

What did Adam do that was so wrong?

What happened afterwards?

Genesis 3:17,19
[17]And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
[19]In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

A

He listened to his wife and ate the fruit in defiance of what he was told not to do. He disobeyed a direct command from God.

This caused sin and death to enter into the world

Q

How many trees were given names? What are they?

Genesis 2:8-9,15-17
[8]And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
[9]And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
[15]And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
[16]And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
[17]But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

A

Q

What is the meaning of “And Adam ‘knew’ his wife…”?

Was this event before or after they was introduced to the serpent?

Genesis 4:1
[1]And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

A

The meaning of “And Adam ‘knew’ his wife…” is they became intimate for the first time. This event happened after they met the serpent. She was still a virgin when they ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Q

Why does Adam call his wife Eve?

Whose seed is the seed of Life?

Genesis 3:15
[15]And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Genesis 3:20
[20]And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

A

Adam called his wife Eve because she is the mother of all living.

Because she is the mother of all living her seed is the Seed of Life. Reversely, the serpent’s seed is the Seed of Death. The two seeds will go to war with each other.

Q

What caused Elisabeth to speak loudly when she saw Mary?

Who was in Elisabeth’s womb?

Who was in Mary’s womb?

How do the passages from Luke contrast with the passages from Genesis?

Luke 1:41-42
[41]And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
[42]And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Genesis 2:21-23
[21]And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
[22]And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
[23]And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

A

It was the Holy Ghost that caused Elisabeth to shout loudly when she saw Mary. Elisabeth was carrying John the Baptist and Mary was carrying Jesus.

Jesus will be the bone and flesh from Mary, male born from female, which is in contrast from the Genius passages where Eve is from Adam, female born from male.

Q

What is common among most of the following verses?

What implicit message is being conveyed when cross referencing these verses?

Acts 5:30
[30]The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

Acts 10:39
[39]And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:

Galatians 3:13
[13]Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

1 Peter 2:24
[24]Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Acts 13:29
[29]And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

Luke 1:42
[42]And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

John 19:25-26
[25]Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
[26]When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

A

The similarities between these verses is that Jesus hung from a tree. The addition of the title given to Jesus in Luke 1:42 conveys the message that Jesus is a fruit that hangs from a tree.

Q

What is the broader message and conclusion when reading the following verses?

Genesis 3:20
[20]And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living

Genesis 3:15
[15]And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Luke 1:42
[42]And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

John 6:50-51
[50]This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
[51]I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 6:52-54
[52]The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
[53]Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
[54]Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

A

Since Eve is the mother of all living by rights her seed(s) is the inheritor(s) of Life. This seed ultimately became the fruit of Jesus and if anyone partakes and eat this fruit they too become inheritors of everlasting Life. This Fruit of Life is the redemption and representation of the Tree of Life, the second tree from the Garden of Eden in Genesis.

Q

In reading the following passages, how many days elapsed from John 1:19 up until John 2:1?

John 1:19-51
[19]And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
[20]And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
[21]And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
[22]Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
[23]He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
[24]And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
[25]And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
[26]John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
[27]He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
[28]These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
[29]The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
[30]This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
[31]And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
[32]And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
[33]And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
[34]And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
[35]Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
[36]And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
[37]And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
[38]Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
[39]He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
[40]One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
[41]He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
[42]And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
[43]The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
[44]Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
[45]Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
[46]And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
[47]Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
[48]Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
[49]Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
[50]Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
[51]And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

John 2:1
[1]And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

A

The events from John 1:19-51 is a period of four days.

Adding the days from John 2:1 is three more days, making the day of the wedding the seventh day.

Q

What is symbolic about the wedding and the wine?

John 2:1-11
[1]And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
[2]And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
[3]And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
[4]Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
[5]His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
[6]And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
[7]Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
[8]And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
[9]When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
[10]And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
[11]This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

A

The wedding is foreshadow of the slained Lamb who resurrected on the third day and the procurement of his wife, the Church.

The wine is symbolic of the blood in the eucharist.

Q

How many Adams are there?

Genesis 1:26
[26]And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Genesis 2:7
[7]And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

1 Corinthians 15:45
[45]And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit

1 Corinthians 15:47
[47]The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven..

A

There are two. The first man was the First Adam. Jesus is known as the second and Last Adam.

Q

From the following passages, how is the First Adam in contrast with the Last Adam?

Genesis 3:17,19
[17]And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
[19]In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

John 2:3-5
[3]And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
[4]Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
[5]His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

John 5:19,30
[19]Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
[30]I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

John 8:28
[28]Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

A

The first Adam listened to the woman rather than obeying God’s command. This brought death and sin into the world.

In contrast, since the Son only does of his Father’s will, the last Adam obeyed God’s command to listen and do what the woman asks. This was his first miracle and symbolic of the eucharist, which brings life.

Q

From the following passages, how does the first Adam contrast with the last Adam?

Genesis 3:17,19
[17]And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

John 12:49-50
[49]For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
[50]And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

John 14:31
[31]But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

A

The first Adam listened to the woman rather than God’s command. This brought death and sin into the world.

In contrast, and since the Son only does the Father’s will, the last Adam obeyed God’s command to listen and honour the woman’s (his mother) request. This resulted in Jesus’ first miracle; symbolic of the eucharist which brings life.

Q

What is the significance of the six waterpots of stone (John2:6)?

John 2:3-10

A

The six waterpots were used by the Jews for ritual and cleansing purification customary under Jewish Law. Within the context of the narrative the wedding is the seventh day from the time John the Baptist introduces the one “whose shoe’s latchet he is not worthy to unloose”. It is the day of the Sabbath. The conveying message is that rituals, practices, and religious traditions of the Law falls short from entering into the day of rest, the Sabbath. It is the blood of Christ that is required to not only offer eternal rest (work six days, rest on seventh) but it also cleanses. The blood of bulls and goats under the old covenant cannot do what the blood of the Lamb does hence, “thou hast kept the good wine until now…”

John 7:37-39
[37]In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
[38]He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39

John 19:34
[34]But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

1) Where is the tree of life located?
2) What did God do to guard the tree of life?
3) Where was Jesus laid to rest?
4) What did Mary Magdalene see when she entered the sepulchre?
5) What was Jesus’ first word to Mary?

Genesis 3:23-24
[23]Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
[24]So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

John 19:38-42
[38]And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
[39]And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
[40]Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
[41]Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
[42]There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

John 20:11-16
[11]But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,
[12]And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
[13]And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.
[14]And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
[15]Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
[16]Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

A

1) The Garden of Eden
2) He placed angelic creatures called Cherubims to guard entry
3) He was laid in a sepulchre located in a garden
4) She saw two angels at the foot and head of the bed.
5) “Woman”
