God the Father Flashcards
The word One God or ‘Theos’ in greek is most of the time prescribed as the proper name to whom?
What about ‘Lord’?
The word ‘God’ is normally referring to the Father.
The word ‘Lord’ normally refers to the Son.
What is the common theme between these passages?
Who is identified as the mediator?
1 Corinthians 8:6
[6]But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
1 Thessalonians 1:9-10
[9]For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
[10]And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Ephesians 4:6
[6]One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
1 Timothy 2:5
[5]For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
John 17:1-3
[1]These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
[2]As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
[3]And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
What’s common between these passages is it shows that the One God is known as the Father. His Fatherhood position and role is also part of his identity as the One God because of his relationship with Jesus Christ who is the mediator between the One God and men.
What’s the name of this Creed?
Who is identified as God?
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Apostles’ Creed
God is identified as the Father almighty.
What’s the name of this Creed?
Who is identified as the One God?
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and
unseen.
We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father; God from
God, Light from Light, true God from true God; begotten not made, one in being with the Father.
Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. By the
power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake He was
crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again, in
fulfillment of the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Nicene Creed
The One God is identified as the Father, the Almighty.
Why is the One God identified as the Father?
Was the One God always the Father?
2 Corinthians 1:3
[3]Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
Ephesians 1:17
[17]That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
Hebrews 1:1-2
[1]God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
[2]Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
John 17:3
[3]And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
The One God is identified as the Father because he is the father to the Son, later known in the flesh as Jesus Christ. It is because of the Son the Father is who He is. Since the Son shares the same essence of God and always existed the Father was always a father, living together in community with the Son and Holy Spirit for all eternity as One.
In relation to the Triune God, how exactly did God create man in His image?
Genesis 1:26
[26]And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Ephesians 3:14-15
[14]For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
[15]Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
Man who is one was created as a community/family (Adam & Eve to be fruitful and multiply) on Earth to reflect God who is the One Community/Family eternally within Himself as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Why did God create families in Heaven and on Earth?
Ephesians 3:14-15
[14]For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
[15]Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
Because he is the Father.
Who raised who from the dead to judge the world in righteousness?
To whom do we owe our ability to live, and move, and have our being? Who are we in relation to him?
Who is the one true God?
Acts 17:24-31
[24]God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
[25]Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
[26]And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
[27]That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
[28]For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
[29]Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
[30]And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
[31]Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
It was the Father that raised the Son from the dead to judge the world in righteousness.
Our abilities to live, move, and being is owed to the Father and we are considered to be his offspring.
The one true God by nature is the Father
The One true God in Jesus created what with man?
(Hint: Cousins, nephews, nieces, brothers, etc.)
Ephesians 3:14-15
[14]For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
[15]Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
Families
Does God need creation in order to be the Father?
Does God need creation in order to love? Why?
Where does the love that we experience come from?
Acts 17:24-25
[24]God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
[25]Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
1 Corinthians 8:6
[6]But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
Ephesians 3:14-15
[14]For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
[15]Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
God does not need creation to be the Father. He is what he is because the Son was always who he was.
God is called a God of Love because love always existed within himself. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit has always loved each other.
The love that we experience is just a share and piece of God’s Love that was always within Himself
How do we know that the Father loves us?
The Father offered the one he loves, his Son, as a sacrifice to redeem and save the very thing that he created for his Son.
Keep in mind, prior to Jesus Christ according to the Bible God had never experienced hurt, pain, betrayal, and death as we do. He went through all of that on our behalf so we may also enter into Him/His Family/His Love through Jesus Christ.
Galatians 4:4-8
[4]But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
[5]To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
[6]And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
[7]Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
[8]Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
According to this verse, who brought all things into being? How did he do it?
What are the implications?
1 Corinthians 8:6
[6]But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
According to the verse it was God the Father who brought all things into being through the Lord Jesus Christ.
The implications are that since we exists equally in both of them and God the Father as well as the Lord Jesus Christ where before all things, they are both equally God. God the Father existed with his Son in eternity before creation.
This also proves that God the Father’s fatherhood is defined by Jesus. He was always a father before he became a father to us. And it should also be noted that the very thing that defined the Father’s fatherhood was offered as a sacrifice for us so that we may enter into His family.
1 John 2:22-23
[22]Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
[23]Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
In your own words, explain the meaning of these verses.
Romans 8:31-34
[31]What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
[32]He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
[33]Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.
[34]Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Romans 8:31-34 is saying that if the Father was willing to give his only Son for us there is nothing else that we can ask Him for that he would not freely give. Everything else is infinitely smaller is comparison to his Son who is also the intercessor between us, our requests, and the Father.
How do these verses relate to entanglement?
1 John 2:22-23
[22]Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
[23]Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
It is impossible to have the Father without the Son and vise versa. Where the Son is, there too will you see the Father. The two along with the Holy Spirit are inseparable.
What is commonly assumed when reading these verses?
Exodus 33:20
[20]And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
John 1:18
[18]No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
John 5:37
[37]And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
John 6:46
[46]Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
1 John 4:12
[12]No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
The common assumption when reading these verses is that God the Father has never been and cannot be seen visually. The meaning of ‘seeing’ in these verses is to ‘understand’. An example is when someone says, “I see your point” when they’ve understood an argument. They don’t literally see the person’s ‘point’, rather they understand what is being said to them. Likewise, all references in the Bible regarding ‘seeing’ the Father means to fully understand the Father which is impossible except for the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Below are references where the Father is visually seen in the Bible known as the Ancient of days:
Daniel 7:9-10,13-14
[9]I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
[10]A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
[13]I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
[14]And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed
