Christology Flashcards
What is the view of God held by Christians and the Catholic Church?
The Father, Son, and Spirit are three eternal relationships inseparable from each other and together make up the one God.
Of the 3 persons in the Godhead, who is considered the true God and what are the differences?
The Father is considered the true God in union with the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son is the eternal Word of the Father.
Why is the Son and the Holy Spirit also considered to also be God?
They partake and share the very nature of the Father always in existence.
Name three examples how Jesus was genuinely fully human?
What was the one thing he didn’t have as a human?
1) He was limited bounded to a time, place, and space.
2) He experienced tiredness, hunger, & thirst.
3) He was birthed, aged, and experienced death.
The one thing he didn’t have as a human was sin, yet he shared in our experience of a sinful world.
How many natures did Jesus have? What were they?
Two. He was fully God and Man.
What would these verses exemplify in relation to the Trinity and the dual natures of Jesus?
Job 5:9
[9]Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:
Job 9:10
[10]Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.
Job 11:7-10
[7]Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
[8]It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
[9]The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
[10]If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?
Job 36:26
[26]Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
Job 37:4-5
[4]After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
[5]God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.
That with our minds it’s o.k to not to fully comprehend or understand how God is One yet three beings at the same time or how Jesus could’ve been fully God and fully human at the same time.
How can Jesus be God and not know everything?
Matthew 24:36
[36]But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
Mark 13:32
[32]But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
Because if he was fully human while on earth he cannot be omniscient. A genuine human does not know all things.
What is Jesus implicitly saying these passages? (Note: All the Mark verses below are the words of Jesus)
Isaiah 40:8
[8]The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
Mark 13:31
[31]Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
Mark 13:19-20,26-27
[19]For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
[20]And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
[26]And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
[27]And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
Luke 22:48
[48]But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
He is the Lord of the Old Testament. Verse 19 of Mark explains how the Lord saves his elect, the same Lord in verse 18 who made creation in the beginning. Later in verse 27 he says the Son of Man gathers together his elect from the four winds. Well, if the Lord gathers HIS elect and the Son of Man also gathers HIS elect, the only conclusion is that the Son of Man is Lord. He is speaking of himself in 3rd person such as the verses:
Mark 13:32
[32]But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
and….
Luke 22:48
[48]But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
and….
Luke 17:24-25
[24]For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
[25]But first must he suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.
as well as…..
Matthew 16:27
[27]For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Additionally, he says his words shall not pass away in Mark 13:31. According to Isaiah, the only one that is able to make such a statement is God. No mere prophet can say such things.
In this particular passage as Jesus speaks of himself in 3rd person, where does he place himself in the hierarchical order?
Mark 13:32
[32]But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
Above man and the angels which are in heaven. And since man and angels are the primary beings of creation, this verse is stated in a way that puts the Son outside and above creation along with the Father.
Mark 1:1-4
[1]The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
[2]As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
[3]The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
[4]John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
1) Who was the voice crying in the wilderness preparing a path for the Lord? Who was the messenger?
2) What prophet wrote, “ Behold, I send my messenger before thy face….”
3) Where else in O.T scripture said that there would be a voice/messenger in the wilderness to prepare a way for the Lord?
4) What does the first four verses of Mark trying to convey? Who is revealed?
1) John the Baptist
2) Malachi 3:1
[1]Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.
3) Isaiah 40:3-5
[3]The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
[4]Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
[5]And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
4) The gospel of Mark is a fulfilment of prophecy and the Lord (Jesus) is revealed following the messenger (John the Baptist)
Mark 1:22-26
[22]And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
[23]And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
[24]Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
[25]And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
[26]And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
How did the unclean spirits know who Jesus was when at this point no one knew who he was, not even the disciples?
They remembered who he was from the heavenly realm. They are able to see beyond the flesh into the inner person.
What is implied when cross referencing the verses from James and the verses of Mark and Luke?
James 2:18-19
[18]Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
[19]Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Mark 1:23-26
[23]And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
[24]Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee,
thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
[25]And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
[26]And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
.
Mark 5:7
[7]And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
Luke 8:28
[28]When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
James 2:19 says that the devils believe and tremble at God which is the same reaction of the spirits when they saw Jesus in the verses of Mark and Luke. The conclusion is that Jesus is the Lord whom the devils/unclean spirits fear.
Where in N.T scripture shows the fulfilment of this prophecy?
Isaiah 40:3-5
[3]The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
[4]Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
[5]And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
Matthew 3:1-3
[1]In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
[2]And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
[3]For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Mark 1:1-4
[1]The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;
Luke 3:2-6,16
[2]Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
[3]And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
[4]As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
[5]Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
[6]And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
[16]John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
Acts 19:4
[4]Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Matthew 16:27. (Jesus speaking)
[27]For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
What verse from Isaiah is Jesus quoting this from?
Isaiah 40:10
[10]Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Where in Isaiah are these prophesies fulfilled?
Matthew 11:1-9
[1]And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
[2]Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
[3]And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
[4]Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
[5]The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
[6]And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
[7]And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
[8]But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
[9]But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
Isaiah 35:3-6
[3]Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.
[4]Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.
[5]Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
[6]Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
