-war in the east was seen as war of racial annihilation
formation of ghettos
-3 mill Soviet Jews under Nazi control
-first in Lodz (320k Jews)
-Jewish Council of Elders (responsible for food etc)
-exploited through forced labour
Conditions of ghettos
-15 ppl in an apartment, 6 per room
-lack of running water, food, medicine
-typhus etc spread quick
-black market for food etc
Warsaw Ghetto
-largest
-380,000 jews
-30% of Warsaw’s population, only 2.4% of the city’s area
-9.2 people to each room
-1940-42 disease, starvation, typhoid
-43,000 residents died in 1941
Einsatzgruppen
-4 groups (600-1000 men) followed Ger into USSR
-mass shootings/ deportations
-15k killed jews and intelligentsia in Poland
-7000 jews killed in Poland in 1939
-40k men involved in the killings helped by locals of countries
-in the baltic, Special Group A killed 250k Jews and Special Group B shot 45k in 1941
