subvert / subversion
- to undermine or alter the expected idea or belief with something that reveals an alternative view, often contrary to convention
dichotomy / dichotomous
- a division or contrast between two opposing ideas or things - e.g. light and dark ; good and evil
deconstruct
- to break down into parts in order to reveal inherent contradiction in its original meaning
hegemony / hegemonic
- the dominant power in a culture ; defining the normalised way of thinking and maintained by those in power
ambiguous / ambiguity
- that which is uncertain, possessing more than one meaning simultaneously
fragmented
- an idea, story, relationship or person who is made of different parts that do not fit well together
liminal / liminality
- relating to a transitional process ; being on the threshold between two things
symbiotic relationship
- two things or people that depend upon another to develop or continue to function
transient / transience
- that which is fleeting, and not lasting
intrinsic
- something that is natural and inherent, as opposed to a learnt, or applied concept
mutability
- something that is mutable is subject to change, or decay, over time
construct
- an idea that is formed from concepts and maybe subjective e.g. gender as a social-construct
juxtaposition
- different or opposing ideas that when seen together reveal a new idea, being juxtaposed
microcosm/macrocosm
- something that echoes on a small scale characteristics of a much larger system, the macrocosm (e.g. all of society, or a culture)
paradigm/ paradigmatic
- a pattern or model of something; an established set of ideas about something
ontology
the set of ideas/ behaviours that create the very beingness of a creature or person and how they understand the world
ambivalent / ambivalence
- having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something
antagonist
- the idea, or character that opposes the protagonist (the main driver of the narrative or events)
agency
- action or intervention leading to an effect or change
hypocrisy
