- Primary infusion (continuous, large volume infusion)
-Med added to compatible primary solution, 500 or 1000ml to be
infused over the prescribed time
-Prepared in pharmacy*
-Run at a continuous rate on IV pump per order- vitamins,
potassium chloride (KCL)
magnesium sulfate, heparin
vIV bag and tubing must be labeled
- IV (push/bolus) medication administration
- Introducing a concentrated dose of a medication directly into the
systemic circulation

vExample: furosemide (Lasix)

üLook up med in IV drug book
Check compatibility
üDraw medication into syringe
üAssess site *
üScrub IV port closest to the pt with alcohol
üAttach syringe to lowest
port-pinch tubing- flush, aspirate
üAttach syringe to lowest
port-pinch tubing- flush, aspirate
üAdminister med per safe time frame
