Thiopental
Barbituate, poor analgesic that raidally crosses the BBB, action within 30-40 seconds. Hepatic metabolism.
Thiopental side effects
Decreases CO, BP, MV. Donot give to someone who is hypovolemic or porphyria.
Midazolam
Benzo. Slow rate of induction, but faster than diazempam. Moderate CV an resp depression.
Negative side effect of using benzos (midazolam and diazepam) as general anesthetics?
Long time to wear off. Prevent this with flumazenil.
Propofool
Used for “day surgery,” *VERY SHORT HALF-LIFE, Vasodilation causes decrease in BP.
Fentanyl / Morphine
Opioids. powerful analgesic to supplemen general anesthesia. respiratory ad CV depression (not much). Nausea during recovery –> treat with naloxone.
Etomidate
Does not cause CV an respiatory deression. Can use in hypovolemic patients
Ketamine
Increases BP and CV output so give to people in shock or who dont have any fluids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Binds NMDA receptors, may have hallucintions days after surgery.
