Barbituates and Alcohols Flashcards
What do you need to know about barbituate withdrawal…
The faster acting, more potent barbituates will have a more severe (worse symptoms and more intens withdrawal symptoms) for a shorter period of time, when compared to a long acting barbituate (will have a less intense but longer withdrawal period).
What is the drug you use when someone has over dosed on alcohol or ethylene glycol, or methanol
Fomeprizole
What are the three most used barbituates??
Thiopental, Secobarbital, Phenobarbital
How do Barituates cause CNS depression?
Bind to GABA-A receptors and increase GABA effect… the channel stays open for longer
What drugdo you use for barbituate overdose??
Flumazenil
Thiopental
Used for brief anesthesia, ultrashort duration
Secobarbital
Used for preanesthetic sedation, and as a hypnotic (sleep aid); Intermediate duration
Phenobarbital
Long acting; daytime sedation and anticonvulsant (seizures).
What happens when you take barbituates at a low dose, middle dose, and then high dose??
At a low dose barbituates are sedative like, create euphoria, and loss of inhibition. At MEDIUM DOSES: barbituate can cause pleasureable intoxication, decreased activity and drowsiness. At HIGH Doses: severe intoxication, intense emotions, and sleep (CV, RESP depression, non-reactive pupils and hypothermia).
