- 1849-1860
- Victor Emmanuel II, King of Sardinia led the unifying proccess
- Allied himself with France to fight Austria out of Northern Italy
- France was scared of Prussia (Austria’s ally), so Victor Emmanuel II only got a little bit back
Phase #2 ITALY
- 1860-1865
- Peasants from Sicily revolted against King of Naples
- Sicily became part of Piedmont
- Parliament recognized Victor Emmanuel II as king of Italy
Phase #3 ITALY
- 1866-1870
- Prussia and Italy won against Austria, giving Venice to Italy
- Rome became capital of Italy, unrecognized by Pope
