IT IS NOT A TUMOR Flashcards
Most common site for bone tumors
Metaphysis
Osteochondroma
Most common bone tumor
Males 2:1
Usually solitary, palpable, painful
Osteoid osteoma
Common primary bone tumor
Characteristic night pain resolved by NSAIDS
Central clearing, cortical thickening
LE and spine
Osteoblastoma
Rare, large bone growth
Pain not relieved by NSAIDS
Lytic apearance
Synovial chondromatosis
Cartilaginous metaplasia of the synovium Multiple loose bodies Middle age Arthroscopic removal X-ray will be on test winkwink
Heterotopic ossification
Bone that forms outside skeleton
Especially around joint after trauma/surgery
Frequently after hip and elbow replacement
Start as warm, firm, tender swelling
Heterotopic ossification diagnostics
Bone scan will show changes sooner
Myositis ossificans
Common, benign bone growth in inflamed muscle.
Pain, swelling mass when growing
Painless when mature
Unicameral bone cyst
Fluid filled cyst of boys 5-15 in proximal humerus and femur.
Well demarcated lesion w/ cortical thinning
Often results in fx leading to dx
Giant cell tumor of bone
Females 20 - 40 Expansive lytic lesions Associated soft tissue mass Distal radius, prox humerus, knee, sacrum Can met to lungs
Aneurysmal bone cyst
Expansile lytic lesion about the knee of individuals <20.
Fluid/fluid levels on MRI
Stippled calcification =
Enchondroma
or
Chondroblastoma
Hemangioma
Incidental finding in spine on MRI
Lipoma
Most common soft tossie tumor
Usually asymptomatic
Soft and freely moveable
Most common site for skeletal mets
Spine
