What is Arab Nationalism?
A nationalist ideology celebrating the glories of Arab civilization, the language and literature of the Arabs and calling for rejuvenation and political union in the Arab world.
What is Zionism?
A movement for the re-establishment and the development and protection of a Jewish nation and what is now Israel.
What is a mandate?
Basically, baby sitting a country. Palestine was under British mandate.
What is the Balfour Declaration and when was it sent?
The Balfour declaration was a letter by the British foreign affairs minister of the time, Baron Rothchild, sent to the Jews saying that it supported their desire for a homeland. IT NEVER SPECIFIED WHERE, IT JUST NOTED SUPPORT.
Why was the Balfour Declaration contradictory?
Because the British had promised Palestine independence for their rebellion against the ottomans in World War One. They had also made a shoddy deal with France about giving them Palestine.
Why was World War Two so crucial to the development of Israel?
- more sympathy for the Zionist cause.
- displaced a large amount of Jews
- anti-semitism was big
Who was Theodore Herzl?
He was the developer of the Zionist theory. He believed that it was impossible for the Jews to assimilate anywhere else because they are one people, so he believed they should return to their rightful biblical home.
Why was the Holocaust so important to the development of Israel?
Displaced so many hundred thousand Jews.
When was the UN Resolution- the Partition plan- instated and why was it so contradictory?
In the year 1947. It went directly against the UN’s charter for self-determination!
When was the first war between the Jews and the Palestinians waged?
In 1948- as a result of the Palestinian refusal of the Partition. Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq teamed up with Israel and yet they lost and lost land to Israel as well.
Why did Israel win the 1948 War?
They were better organized.
They had better funding and they had more determination.
What did Gamal Abdul Nassar believe and who was he?
He was the leader of the Egypt and believe that Arabs should own a,, of their own land.
What was the Suez Canal Crisis and when did it take place?
It happened in the year 1956. Israel needed the Suez Canal in order to obtain goods to supply their country. Abdul Nassar thus blocks and attempt to nationalize it. Britain and Franca
E aid Israel and invade the Sinai peninsula. This led to the gaining of land by Israel.
When was the Palestinian People’s Organization (PLO) developed and what was their first mission?
The PLO, representing the Palestinian people, was founded in 1964. Their first mission was to destroy Israel.
When was the Six Day war and what happened during it?
The Six Day War took place in the year 1967. The Arab countries Egypt and Jordan ganged up against Israel and yet, despite this, Israel wins. Then thereafter hold onto the land won in warfare. Palestinian response to this was very angry.
